Paint Correction
Paint correction is a meticulous process in automotive detailing aimed at restoring and enhancing the finish of a vehicle's paintwork. It involves removing imperfections such as swirl marks, scratches, and oxidation, revealing a smooth and glossy surface.
Scratch Removal
Most scratches can be polished out of a vehicles paintwork. The general rule of thumb is if your fingernail catches on a scratch it cannot be polished out completely, but usually can be reduced by polishing. Scratches that go into the paint, primer, or down to metal cannot be polished out. Due to the risky nature of scratch removal we take paint thickness measurements at 15+ points over the whole car to ensure its a good candidate for correction or polishing.
Polishing Process
The process of polishing out scratches requires us to use varying degrees of cutting compounds, polishing compounds, and cutting/polishing pads. To remove a scratch we have to remove clear coat around the scratch to smooth out the surface. Due to the removal of clear coat a car can only be polished a handful of times before the clear coat layer is too thin to continue. There is always a risk of removing too much clear and getting into the paint layer. It is very important to notify your detailers of any repainted panels or previous polishing work done.
A challenging fix
This customer of ours has some chickens use the hood of his Charger as a roost during a bad storm, leaving many deep scratches in his paint. He attempted to use his touch up paint to fill the scratches and improve the look up the hood but it didn't go as planned, so he thankfully brought it to us.
Flawless results
We had to wet sand this hood to take down the high spots left by the touch up paint and then follow it with several steps of cutting and polishing to give the hood a great finish.
